How Much Do ChatGPT Ads Cost? Budget and Real Expenses

ChatGPT ads are open to advertisers, and the first question on every call is the same: how much does it cost. The answer consists of one hard number and several things nobody can honestly calculate yet.
The hard number: the minimum daily campaign budget is 25 euros, about $30 a day in the accounts we run. That is the floor below which you simply cannot set up a campaign. Check the exact minimum for your billing country in the Ads Manager, because it is the panel, not a rate card, that sets it.
What makes up the bill
As in every paid channel, media budget is not the whole cost. There are four line items.
Media budget. The money that goes to OpenAI for serving. A minimum of about $30 a day per campaign, roughly $900 a month with one campaign.
Campaign setup. Account verification, installing the tracking pixel, setting a conversion event and tagging landing page URLs. One-time work, but without it the campaign is not measurable, so skipping it to save money makes no sense. We cover it in our article on the OpenAI pixel and conversion tracking.
Ad creative. Copy in several variants for testing, and a landing page for the specific service. If you already have a decent offer page, this cost is small.
Management and measurement. Someone has to watch what is happening and make decisions. In a new channel with no market reference points, that work weighs more than in Google Ads, where everyone knows what to expect.
What budget to set for a meaningful test
That is the right question, because the minimum daily budget only says what it takes for a campaign to run at all, not what it takes to learn something.
Do the math like this: about $30 a day times six to eight weeks. That is $1,500 to $2,000 for a test that yields a conclusion. Shorter makes no sense for two reasons. The campaign needs time to leave its learning phase, and you need enough inquiries for their cost not to be a coincidence.
Add a few days for brand verification, during which your ads may not show yet. That time costs nothing, but it pushes the start date, so plan for it.
If $1,500 is your entire advertising budget, this channel is not for now. That money will do more in campaigns that already bring customers, and that is not a refusal, it is arithmetic.
What a lead from this channel costs
We do not know, and we will not give you a number we have not measured. The channel opened to advertisers too recently for anyone to have reliable cost-per-customer data.
That, by the way, is the first honesty test when choosing a vendor. If you hear a specific CPL for ChatGPT ads, ask for the source and the number of campaigns it was calculated on. The answer usually ends the conversation.
We do have reference points for the channels we have run for years. Across 20 of our European campaigns in 11 industries, cost per lead ranged from about $2 to $11 depending on the industry. The full material is in our CPL and ROAS benchmark, and those are the numbers you will compare the ChatGPT result against.
How this floor compares with other channels
About $30 a day is high for an entry price.
On TikTok the minimum daily ad group budget is $20, as we describe in our article on how much TikTok ads cost. In Google Ads and on Facebook there is no comparable hard floor: technically you can start with a few dollars a day, though it is rarely worth it.
That does not mean ChatGPT is the more expensive channel. It only means it demands a bigger decision on the way in. Whether it is more expensive per customer will be decided by measurement. A channel with a higher cost per click is often cheaper per sale if it catches the moment when a person is deciding. And a conversation with an assistant is that moment far more often than scrolling a feed.
There is also a free route, and for many companies a more sensible one
If those numbers put you off, there is a second way in. You can get into an assistant’s answer without paying for impressions: not by buying ads, but by getting the model to mention your company on its own when someone asks for a recommendation in your industry. That is called generative engine optimization, GEO.
There is no $30-a-day floor and no account verification, and the effect does not vanish the day you switch off the budget. It is slower, measured in months, and it takes work on content and business data rather than a deposit into an ad account. What ranking in ChatGPT looks like in practice is in a separate step-by-step guide. We compare both routes in our article on ChatGPT ads vs. GEO, and the service itself is on our AI SEO agency page.
At a limited budget that is where we start clients, and we say so even when the client came in asking for ads.
What this budget does not buy
One thing worth knowing before you calculate profitability. If you target Europe, you cannot build remarketing or lookalike audiences there, because custom audiences are not supported in campaigns targeting the European Economic Area and Switzerland.
That affects cost. In Google and on Meta, part of the conversions get closed by cheap remarketing, which lowers the average cost per customer. In a European ChatGPT campaign the entire budget works on cold traffic, so when you compare cost per inquiry across channels you are not quite comparing the same thing. We break it down in our article on ChatGPT ads targeting.
What to do before you spend the first dollar
Three things, in this order. Start account verification, because it takes a few days and costs nothing. Install the pixel and set a conversion event, because without them you will count nothing but clicks. Write down how much you can pay for an inquiry and when you will decide whether to continue.
The last item is the most often skipped and the most expensive. A test without a set threshold and deadline does not end in a conclusion. It slowly turns into a fixed expense nobody questions anymore. The full launch process is in our step-by-step guide on how to advertise on ChatGPT.
