How to Connect GA4 to a Universal Analytics Property

If you already have a Google Analytics 4 property, the only thing left is to connect it to your Universal Analytics (GA3) property, so the two show up as a linked pair in the Setup Assistant. Follow the steps below.
Note: Universal Analytics stopped processing new data on July 1, 2023. Connecting the two properties does not bring old GA3 data into GA4; it only links them in the admin panel.
How to connect GA4 to an existing Universal Analytics property
1. In your Universal Analytics (GA3) property, go to Admin in the left-hand menu.
2. In the Property column, click GA4 Setup Assistant.
3. Expand the Select an existing Google Analytics 4 property field and choose your existing App + Web property.
“Google Analytics 4” is the new name for what used to be called an App + Web property.
Click Connect properties.
You should see the following view with the status Connected.
This means your Universal Analytics property has been successfully connected to the App + Web (GA4) property.
4. Click See your GA4 property. You will be redirected to the App + Web property (that is, your GA4 property).
5. Go to Property Settings.
6. Fix the property name: replace “App+Web” with “GA4”.
The GA4 Setup Assistant option stays available in the panel even after the GA4 property is connected; clicking it now shows a See your GA4 property button.
This means your Google Analytics 4 property is now connected to your Universal Analytics property.
Once the two are connected, check whether GA4 is actually collecting the same events the old version did. The migration from Universal Analytics is the most common place where conversions get lost, and the mistake usually shows up months later. We run exactly this kind of verification as part of a marketing audit.
