How to Exclude Internal Traffic in GA4 (IP Filter)

Internal traffic is generated by the site owner, employees, vendors and other contractors working on your website. It inflates visit counts and drags down the real conversion rate. Since ad campaigns are optimized on website traffic data, excluding your own traffic matters: it is the only way to get a clear picture of how actual customers behave on your site.
How to exclude internal traffic in GA4
1. Open your Google Analytics 4 property.
2. Go to Admin in the left-hand menu.
3. In the Property column, go to Data Streams.
4. Select the data stream you want to exclude internal traffic from.
5. Go to Configure tag settings.
6. Click Show all.
7. Go to Define internal traffic.
8. Click Create.
You should see a view like this:
9. In the Rule name field, name your filter, for example Internal traffic.
10. Leave internal in the traffic_type value field, or change it if you pass a different identifier for internal traffic. The value you set here is what the data filter will look for in the next step.
11. Pick one of the match types from the dropdown and enter the IP address.
IP address equals matches a single IP address only.
IP address begins with matches every IP address that starts with the value you enter.
IP address ends with matches every IP address that ends with the value you enter.
IP address contains matches every IP address that contains the value you enter.
IP address is in range matches a range of IP addresses (CIDR notation).
You can click What’s my IP address? to find the IP of the device you are using.
12. Click Create.
The new rule will look like this:
13. Click the ‘x’ in the top left corner three times to return to the Admin section of your GA4 property.
14. If you are excluding traffic from your own device, open your website from it. If you are excluding a different IP address, ask the person using that address to open the site.
15. Open the Realtime report in the left-hand menu.
16. Click Add comparison +.
17. Expand the Select dimension field and type Test. Then choose Test data filter name.
18. Expand the Dimension values field, check Internal Traffic and click OK.
19. Click Apply.
A new comparison should now be applied to the report:
After you refresh the page, filtered data should also appear under Test data filter name.
That is your proof the filter is set up correctly.
20. Go to Admin in the left-hand menu.
21. In the Property column, click Data Settings → Data Filters.
22. Click the three-dot icon, then Activate filter.
23. Click Activate filter again to confirm.
The internal traffic filter is now active.
Your own team’s visits can noticeably inflate session counts on a smaller site and, at the same time, lower the conversion rate you use to make budget decisions. There are a dozen or so settings like this in GA4, and we go through all of them in a marketing audit.
